An audience of makers

Portland Center for the Media Arts (PCMA) is an educational and cultural arts organization dedicated to nurturing and expanding an artistic community committed to the innovative and creative application of the media arts. PCMA achieves this mission through nonprofit outreach, media production, instructional programming, the provision of equipment and studio facilities, and the production of exhibitions and demonstrations in the public square.

Production

Empowering the greater good

One of the distinguishing marks of Portland Center for the Media Arts is that it operates as a professional media studio for other public benefit organizations. In today's media intensive world, we have found that nonprofit, cultural art, educational and other community groups have limited access to affordable media production services. This greatly limits the message and fundraising power of these organizations.

PCMA's vision is to leverage its creative expertise, equipment and faculties to provide professional grade media production services "at cost" to other public benefit organizations. By working exclusively in the nonprofit sector, PCMA is able to accomplish its directive to empower the greater good by bringing the highest possible production value to the community organizations that are in fact doing the most good.

PCMA prides itself on being a nonprofit for nonprofits, combining the power of giving with the power of media to amplify the mission and vision of every organization we touch.

Community

Redefining community access

PCMA actively seeks to produce original programming from its community of members. To be a member of the PCMA production community requires a serious commitment to the media production lifestyle and a willingness to continually push the medium. While all programming on PCMA Youtube channels double as educational experiences for its members, the actual content of each program is expected to be an authentic creative product with professional production value.

Education

The Media Age

We live in a media age, and media arts are as much a part of modern culture as is technology. We have found that media arts education, however, especially in the public schools, typically has both limited funding and limited reach. PCMA is actively designing programs to fill the gap in media arts education, linking media fundamentals with both professional production value and modern applications.

Most of PCMA classes are either seminar based or are active programming, and focus on an immersive learning atmosphere. Students are actively put to work in the "doing" of media, and class levels are based on the ability to produce specific levels of production value in a finished product.

Exhibition

Opportunities for inspiration

At PCMA we believe that art inspires community, and that media art in particular has an opportunity for dramatic and cultural impact. Our areas of focus are high profile visual and auditory experiences that impact the lived experience of the community as a whole. We look to work with artists that have an interest in the innovative use of established media technology as well as emerging media paradigms. Our projects look to educate, inspire, and create shared community experiences.
